Ukrainian Songs Get Applause in Germany, Despite Ban on Applauding

30.06.2010
ConCord vocal ensemble has pleasantly surprised European music lovers and professionals at the international A Capella Leipzig festival and contest held in Germany. 14 vocal ensembles from nine countries have been invited to take part in the contest. Ukrainians were the only performers to have drawn applause.

“Despite ban on applauding contesters, the audience couldn’t retain applause and Bravo screams after the performance of Ptichka (Bird) Ukrainian folk song,” says the ensemble’s director Svitlana Homeniuk.

The audience and the jury were particularly impressed by Ukrainian soloists’ voices and their authentic clothes sewn specifically for the performance. But professionals have agreed that Ukrainian folk music is barely heard in Europe and asked Ukrainian artists to perform more songs of folk repertoire in future.

“It’s not surprising as Ukraine was represented only by the ConCord ensemble at the contest. And it has become possible due to support of Arseniy Yatsenyuk’s Open Ukraine Foundation,” Mrs. Homeniuk points out.

After a successful performance Ukrainian a capella singers were invited on a Germany tour. Besides it has been agreed to organize a concert together with Russian Akvarel ensemble in Kyiv and Saint-Petersburg and to start more active cooperation with a jury member Katarina Henryson from Sweden.

ConCord vocal ensemble was created in 2008. It includes graduates and students of Chaikovskyi National Music Academy of Ukraine: Oleksandr Los (contratenor), Vilen Kilchenko (tenor), Lev Remeniev (tenor), Denys Krutko (tenor), Anton Shpak (baritone), Oleksii Kriachun (bass), Viacheslav Shevchenko (sound manager). The singers perform jazz, folk, pop music.
